Towns of The Garden Route:

When one thinks of Knysna, they often picture the stately Knysna Heads that dominate the covers of post cards around the world.  These great sandstone cliffs guard the mouth of the lagoon, connecting the estuary with the sea.  Knysna enjoys a year-round warm climate that makes it a fantastic vacation destination.  The Knysna Waterfront is a bustling place no matter what time of year you visit.  It is arguably the most popular leisure & shopping destination in the region, boasting a premier marina, docking luxury yachts & cruise liners.  Whether it’s a day of shopping or a unique dining experience you seek, Knysna Waterfront has it all.  You will also be able to book boat tours such as lunch or sunset cruises & ferries to explore Knysna’s beauty.  Knysna is built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, known as the Knysna Lagoon. The lagoon is unique in that it features the only estuarine seahorses of its kind in the world & visitors are encouraged to scuba dive to see them.  The Knysna Lagoon is one of the few places along the coast (& in the world) that supports an oyster hatchery, of which the oysters are reputed as being the tastiest in the world.

Sedgefield is a beautiful seaside village, lying between George & Knysna.  The town is surrounded by glistening lakes, vegetated sand dunes, dense pine plantations, the Swartvlei Estuary, & the warm Indian Ocean.  Sedgefield, described by some as a sleepy village, is known for its year-round mild weather, making it an excellent holiday destination no matter the season.  The laidback atmosphere is reflected in the town’s motto: “slow town”.  Bordering the Goukamma Nature Reserve & the Wilderness National Park, Sedgefield leaves visitors spoilt for choice when it comes to bird watching opportunities & nature activities.  A major draw card to Sedgefield is the Scarab Craft Market held every Saturday morning, offering fresh produce, arts & crafts.  Local attractions include Gericke’s lookout point which resembles a sleeping lion, & the protected dunes featuring Cape fynbos plantations & rare bird species.  The area surrounding Sedgefield is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Groenvlei Lake is the only fresh water lake in the area & is a popular spot for Bass fishing.

Wilderness is another sought after holiday destination.  Tourists flock to Wilderness for its wide-stretching beaches, tranquil seas, & moderate climate all year round.  Come & experience the friendly hospitality & natural beauty for which Wilderness is renowned for.  The quiet coastal village of Wilderness lies between the Kaaimans River & the Goukama Nature Reserve, & is bordered by the towering Outeniqua Mountains.  Extensive waterways, pristine beaches, & lush indigenous forest make it a nature lover’s paradise.  Water sport enthusiasts flock to the ocean, rivers, lakes, & lagoons.  Wilderness not only overlooks the ocean, but also the calm lagoon (Touw River Estuary).  Bird watchers are attracted by the abundant birdlife.  The wetlands are home to over 200 species of bird, including the Fish Eagle, Nightjar, & Southern Boubou.  Wilderness has over 18km of golden beach sands that are ideal for fishing, sunbathing, swimming, surfing, or a leisurely stroll. The most popular beaches include the Touw River mouth, Leentjiesklip, The Boardwalk on 6th Avenue, The Fisherman’s walk on 8th Avenue, & Kleinkrantz.  Wilderness boasts wonderful dolphin & whale watching at Dolphin Point / Map of Africa, Wilderness Beach, 6th Avenue lookout point & Flat Rock.  Although Bryde’s whales, bottlenose dolphins, & humpback dolphins can be seen throughout the year, the best time to see Southern Right Whales is between July & November.
